Overview
One of the smaller schools in the southern region of the United States is Virginia Tech. It is a liberal arts college and it offers a limited amount of degree programs and a high concentration on technical studies, arts, and specialized fields. It offers a strict acceptance rate, small class sizes, and despite a link to their division 1 sports teams, it is mainly a center for educational success.
Academics
Academics is the key to this small school. Located in a rural area of West Virginia, this is one place where academics take center stage. The teacher to student ratio is on average 12:1, which is far smaller than many other universities in the southern region. As far as the most popular degrees are concerned, aside from general studies, the top draws for a degree include chemical, mechanical, electrical and other engineering programs. Aside from that, health care, and business studies.
Social Life
Social life at Virginia Tech will be different than larger schools. Since there are only 1,300 some odd students enrolled, you will find that many students either feel ostracized or they form tight bonds with other classmates. The small class size allows for long time friends to meet and go on a journey of academics. That tradeoff is one that many students seek out as it’s easy to get lost amidst larger schools that have 50,000 students or more. Social life in and around school is focused on the campus, but nearby cities and other outside influences can be found upon exploring the city limits and more.
Campus
Virginia Tech is a small school, it only registers roughly 1,300 students annually, and despite a large football program and other sports options, it is mainly an academic focused school. Another element that you’ll need to consider is the fact that you will have to deal with a rural community right outside of campus. The school is large enough to facilitate a great education, and could help in regards to creating a traditional college experience, but it is not nearly as sprawling as some others in the region.
Final Review
Virginia Tech is a small school and is really for those that want a higher education in a very specialized field of study. With a focus on tech and liberal arts, it’s not for everyone, but it is not a bad thing. You’ll find that the smaller class sizes, and attention to finer details makes this school a good overall solution for today’s students.
